Compassionate grounds claim

You can make a claim to be paid from your superannuation balance on compassionate grounds by making a direct application to the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA).

Once approval has been granted by APRA, an Application for Payment of Benefit - Compassionate Grounds Form must be completed and forwarded to:

HIP

Locked Bag 23

HAYMARKET  NSW  1236

APRA will only consider circumstances that may satisfy 'compassionate grounds' which are restricted to the need to pay for:

  • Medical expenses for members or their dependents; or
  • Partial payment of home loans to avoid foreclosure of the loan; or
  • Need to pay for expenses associated with death, funeral or burial for members or their dependants
  • Modification of your home or vehicle for a member or dependant suffering a medical disability; or
  • Medical transport.

How much can be released to you?

HIP will pay the amount that is stated in the approval letter received from APRA, less any applicable taxation.

Can you have more than one compassionate grounds claim in a year?

Depending on your circumstances, APRA may approve more than one compassionate grounds claim in one year. If you are claiming for mortgage assistance you are limited to a maximum amount of up to three-months' repayments and 12-months' interest in any year. Please refer to the APRA website for more details or contact them directly on 1300 131 060.
